Research has shown that one of the first things people notice
when they meet someone new is their smile.
What causes teeth discolouration? There are numerous causes. The most common include ageing, consumption of staining foods, drinks and substances (curries, coffee, tea, cola, red wine and tobacco), direct trauma to teeth, nerve degeneration. During teeth formation, consumption of the anti-biotic tetracycline or excessive fluoride may cause teeth discolouration. Some mouth washes have been known to cause tooth discolouration. There are two ‘ ingredients ‘ used in many mouth-washes; a) Chlorhexidine and b) Cetylpyridinium chloride.
The first, Chlorohexidine is generally available by prescription only. As this mouth rinse ingredient is used to help treat gum disease. Although this is only used for a short period of time, it has been know to cause teeth staining. The stains are not permanent and can only be removed by a visit to your dentist. Cetylpyridinium chloride is the common ingredient in a lot of over the counter mouthwashes and can cause temporary staining of teeth.
If you have dental fluorosis (due to excessive ingestion of fluoride during the early maturation stages of enamel formation) or tooth enamel that looks similar to any of the pictures in the following link (see dental fluorosis photos here), laser teeth whitening will have minimal effect, so please look at the photos before making your booking. If your teeth resemble any of the photographs in the linked page you should consult your own dentist, as microabrasion, or porcelain veneers are generally the best cosmetic solution for this.
There are a number of reasons why you might get your teeth whitened. Everyone is different; and just as our hair and skin colour vary, so do our teeth. Very few people have brilliant-white teeth, and our teeth can also become more discoloured as we get older.
Calculus or tartar can also affect the colour of teeth. Some people may have staining under the surface, which can be caused by certain antibiotics or tiny cracks in the teeth which take up stains.
During this procedure a lip, cheek & tongue retractor is placed inside the mouth. A dental dam is applied along the upper vestibule and cured with the blue LED light to form a seal along the full upper and lower arch of gums to protect them from the bleaching agent. Teeth whitening will not lighten porcelain, composite or any other restorative material. The UV light speeds up the chemical reaction of the whitening product and the colour change can be achieved more quickly using this procedure. This teeth whitening procedure can make teeth up to ten shades lighter.
Some people may find that their teeth become sensitive to cold during or after the treatment. Others report discomfort in the gums, a sore throat or white patches on the gum line. These symptoms are usually temporary and should disappear within a few days of the treatment finishing.
If any of these side effects continue you should go to your dentist.
Tooth whitening can only lighten your existing tooth colour. Also it only works on natural teeth. It will not work on any types of ‘false’ teeth such as dentures, crowns and veneers.
If your dentures are stained or discoloured visit your dentist and ask for them to be cleaned. Stained veneers, crowns or dentures may need replacing; again ask your dentist.
You can help to keep your teeth white by cutting down on the amount of food and drink you have that can stain teeth. Don’t forget, stopping smoking can also help prevent discolouring and staining.
We recommend the following tips to care for your teeth:
» Brush your teeth twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste
» Cut down on how often you have sugary snacks and drinks
» Purchase the White Guard Home whitening kit to maintain your white smile
and visit your dentist twice a year
There are several whitening toothpastes on the market. Although they do not affect the natural colour of your teeth, they may be effective at removing staining and therefore may improve the overall appearance of your teeth. Whitening toothpaste may also help the effect last, once your teeth have been professionally whitened.
We recommend that you look for our accreditation symbol on the packaging of oral care products. This is a guarantee that the claims made about the product have been scientifically and clinically checked by an independent panel of experts.
Home kits are cheaper but require you to use a mouth tray and apply a whitening gel yourself over a period of 2 weeks or so. The whitening gel usually is not as strong as that used by your dentist or teeth bleaching clinic, and therefore requires you to administer it as per the instructions (usually for up to 1 - 2 hours twice a day for up to 2 weeks).
Home teeth whitening kits are ideal for those people who have a little discolouration, but for those with very heavily stained teeth (especially when caused by somking) in general will get a better result from the powerful chasirside bleaching and light activation as used by your dentist and teeth bleaching clinic. Good results can be obtained for heavily discoloured teeth using home bleaching kits, but you will need to used the home whitening kit daily for a number of weeks. As a follow up or to maintain premium white teeth home teeth whitening kits are excellent value for money. Once your teeth have been laser whitened, you only need to use a home top up whitening kit once a month (for a few hours - for 1 or 2 days as appropriate) to maintain/improve your white smile.
We use 1 of 2 systems depending on your suitability, all ensure fast and safe teeth whitening. Teeth are whitened by 5 to 10 shades on the Vita shade guide. The method is clearly much quicker than at home tray whitening which takes 7 – 14 days.
An Ultra violet light, from which harmful and irritating beams are eliminated, is emitted. The Laser light activates the gel (there is very little heat), which prevents high hypersensitivity and pain - often present at teeth whitening.
The whitening is achieved by oxidation of stains and elimination of acquired discolorations. This process does not damage the structure of teeth and enamel.
We charge £300 for laser teeth whitening, but do offer different promotional discounts displayed on the website index page from time to time.
